What Is A Skilled Nursing Home?

The definition of a skilled nursing home is a medical facility offering similar services as a hospital, providing care for the appropriate seniors with optional long-term or short-term care. The homes basically have regular scheduled doctor rounds, meals, licensed staff and nurses, shared rooms, hospital beds, and housekeeping. Skilled nursing home care has a relaxed atmosphere that provides a pleasant environment with optimal nurse to resident ratios giving everyone a nurse for themselves.

To compare skilled nursing homes to assisted living communities, the residents in the skilled homes receive medical supervision 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They supply solutions for patients with complicated medical issues. The problems the residents could have may include mental illnesses such as dementia, physical illnesses like major infections, wound care, IV therapy, tube feeding, and physical/occupational therapy. The skilled nurses that are located in these facilities are an epic solution for the seniors who are unable to care for themselves on a day-to-day basis with having diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Skilled nursing homes generally provide teams of medical care to the residents. The "administrator", a licensed individual who oversees the whole department and the licensed Director of Nursing (D.O.N.) who is accountable for the administration of each of the departments which provide the care for the patients when needed. The D.O.N.s are right there involved with each individual patient making sure they get the proper care for their specific needs. Some of their chores include directing the nurses, interacting with the physicians and resolving any patient-related issues. In most nature, the Director of Nurses is the individual who oversees the daily medical care of the resident.

However, a skilled care nursing home will customarily have other professionals on board to assist with patients needs. A social worker is typically on staff to assist the patients with their emotional problems and arrangements for the patients after care discharge. Occupational and physical therapists work within the structure of care, reporting progress to the doctors and coordinating specifically ordered therapies. The med nurses generally take care of administering the patients medications and prescriptions. Lastly, the activities director who is in charge creating and running social interaction between residents and planning their daily activities.

Individuals contemplating a skilled nursing home should investigate their choices and options of their individual situation before making their decision. There are different types of nursing home care options to choose from such as assisted living nursing homes or a veterans nursing home. Other senior living communities include facilities that provide senior living services in a private nursing home or in chains such as Manor Nursing Home.
